What Is a Solana Epoch?
A Solana epoch is a network-wide operating cycle made up of a fixed number of slots. Each slot is an opportunity for a scheduled leader to produce a block, so the actual duration of an epoch changes slightly with network slot speed. That is why the current Solana epoch countdown is an estimate rather than a fixed calendar deadline.
Epoch boundaries matter to native staking because rewards are calculated by epoch and credited after eligible epochs finish. New stake activation and stake deactivation also progress around these boundaries, which explains why a confirmed staking transaction may remain activating or deactivating until the network changes epochs.
